• Approximately 1.7 million new infections reported last year in Africa.
  
• 61% of those infected in Africa are women.
  
• In the past year there have been over 1.6 million HIV deaths in Africa.
  
• There are approx. 2 million children under the age of 15 living with HIV.
  
• Young people (aged 15 - 24) account for more than half of all new infections world-wide.
  

• To reduce the annual toll of new infections by enabling individuals to protect themselves from infection.
  
• To cope with the cumulative impact of over 17 million AIDS deaths on orphans and other survivors, on communities and national development.
  
• To bring health care, support and solidarity to a growing population of people with HIV-related illness.
  

Act4Africa works to alleviate the threat of AIDS through:

• The delivery of HIV/AIDS Prevention Programmes in schools, communities, army and prison camps in Africa.
  
• The delivery of Behavioural Change Programmes to improve communication between men and women, empower women to protect themselves from AIDS and teach men to respect women as equals.
  
• Reducing the stigma of AIDS and providing local people with education about how the AIDS virus is spread.
  
• The development of Life Clubs and Peer to Peer Education Programmes in Schools to enable young people to receive HIV/AIDS education programmes in a confidential environment.
